Transitions

Key transitions

Adjustments and changes as your baby grows, in the order they typically come up.

Use infant insert

Safety critical

Child weighs 5–11 lb (2.3–5 kg). You MUST use the infant insert if the harness straps are positioned above the child's shoulders and the child weighs between 5–11 lb.

Install the infant insert to improve harness fit and recline angle for smaller infants. Pull the harness buckle through the slot in the bottom of the insert, route the harness straps through the side gaps, push the insert firmly into the seat, and keep the crotch belt locked in the inner position.

Adjust harness/head support height

Safety critical

Whenever the harness is no longer at the correct shoulder level: rear-facing at or just below the shoulders, or forward-facing at or just above the shoulders.

With the harness loose, squeeze the head support button and move the head support to a locked position so the harness is at the correct shoulder height. Keep the bottom of the head support close to, but not compressing, the child's shoulders.

Adjust crotch belt position

Safety critical

When the current crotch belt position is no longer the one closest to, but not under, the child.

Loosen and unbuckle the harness, move the crotch belt plate forward or backward to the desired position, and rethread the buckle through the correct seat-cover slot. If the infant insert is in use, remove and reinstall it per the manual.

Optional: remove head insert

Informational

The head insert may be used or removed for improved comfort or fit of any child at any time.

Remove the head insert only if needed for comfort or fit. Nuna does not give a weight-, height-, or age-based removal point for this component.

Optional: remove harness pads

Informational

The harness pads may be used or removed for any child; small infants may have better fit to the harness with the shoulder pads removed.

Remove the harness pads if needed for better fit. Nuna does not give a weight-, height-, or age-based removal point for this component.

Remove infant insert

Safety critical

The infant insert is only for use with infants who weigh between 5–11 lb (2.3–5 kg).

Stop using the infant insert once the child is above 11 lb (5 kg). After removal, re-check harness height and crotch belt position for correct fit.

Stop using rear-facing lower anchors

Safety critical

If installed rear-facing with the lower anchor belt and the child weighs over 35 lb (15.9 kg).

Do not continue rear-facing lower-anchor installation above 35 lb. Reinstall the restraint using an allowed vehicle-belt method.

Transition to forward-facing

Safety critical

When rear-facing is outgrown and the child is at least 2 years old, 30–65 lb (13.6–30 kg), and 34–49 in. (87–125 cm) or less.

Reinstall the RAVA forward-facing using a permitted forward-facing installation method. Select a forward-facing recline position 1–5 (RED), and always use the tether if the vehicle is equipped with a tether anchor point and vehicle requirements are met. Nuna also cites the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation to keep children rear-facing as long as possible up to 2 years of age, or until they reach the seat's maximum rear-facing height and weight.

Stop using forward-facing lower anchors

Safety critical

If installed forward-facing with the lower anchor belt and the child weighs over 40 lb (18 kg).

Do not continue forward-facing lower-anchor installation above 40 lb. Reinstall the restraint using an allowed vehicle-belt method and use the tether as directed.

Stop using the RAVA when outgrown

Safety critical

Child exceeds 65 lb (30 kg) or exceeds 49 in. (125 cm) overall.

Discontinue use of the RAVA once the child is over the seat's overall size limits. The reviewed official sources do not provide booster-mode use for RAVA.

Safety

Usage warnings

  • The infant insert is only for use with infants who weigh 5–11 lb (2.3–5 kg).
  • You MUST use the infant insert if the harness straps are positioned above the child's shoulders and the child weighs between 5–11 lb; the harness must be positioned at or just below the child's shoulders.
  • Do not use the lower anchor belt rear facing when restraining a child over 35 lb (15.9 kg), or forward facing when restraining a child over 40 lb (18 kg).
  • Always use the tether for forward-facing installation if the vehicle is equipped with a tether anchor point and vehicle requirements are met; never use the tether in rear-facing installation.
  • Use either the vehicle seat belt or the lower anchors to install the restraint; never use both methods at the same time.
  • If an infant's head falls forward, the restraint must be reclined more. Nuna directs use of the infant insert with infants 5–11 lb (2.3–5 kg) to improve the recline angle for smaller infants.
