  • Infant insert: designed/recommended for 4–11 lbs (1.8–5 kg); it may continue beyond 11 lbs until all fit criteria are met.
  • Transition out of the MESA V2: by first birthday or the 1-inch rule, whichever comes first; transition should also occur when the child meets the 35 lb weight limit.
  • Forward-facing minimum: not applicable. MESA V2 is rear-facing only.
  • Booster mode: not applicable. MESA V2 is an infant car seat and does not convert to booster mode.

Transitions

Key transitions

Adjustments and changes as your baby grows, in the order they typically come up.

Remove harness pads if needed for smaller-child fit

Safety critical

When using the MESA V2 with a smaller child to achieve proper harness tightness and chest clip placement.

Remove the optional harness pads before securing the child. The manual also states they must be removed when securing a preemie.

Adjust headrest and harness height

Safety critical

As the child grows, keep these fit criteria met: harness straps are at or slightly below shoulders, and the bottom of the headrest is positioned at or up to 1 inch above shoulders.

Pull the head restraint adjuster tab and slide the head restraint up or down until the harness rests at the shoulders or slightly below and the headrest is positioned correctly.

Remove infant insert

Safety critical

Remove only after all fit criteria are achieved: harness straps are at or slightly below shoulders; bottom of the headrest is at or up to 1 inch above shoulders; chest clip is at armpit level; crotch buckle rests securely against the child with no gaps and the child is not sitting on top of the buckle; there is room to tighten the harness properly; and the child is not slouching. UPPAbaby notes the insert is designed/recommended for 4–11 lbs and may remain beyond 11 lbs until all criteria are met.

Once all listed fit criteria are met without it, remove the infant insert.

Move crotch buckle to outer position

Safety critical

If the child is on top of the buckle in the inner position.

Unbuckle the harness, flip the carrier over, insert the metal clip completely through the shell and seat pad, move the buckle to the outer slot, then check that it is securely attached by pulling up on the buckle.

Transition out of the MESA V2

Safety critical

By first birthday or when the child meets the 35 lb weight limit, exceeds 32 in in height, or the top of the head is less than 1 inch from the top of the headrest structure in its highest position — whichever comes first.

Stop using the MESA V2 and move the child to a convertible car seat. In the next seat, keep the child rear-facing as long as possible.

Safety

Usage warnings

  • This child restraint is for rear-facing use only.
  • UPPAbaby advises that all infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer.
  • Do not use this child restraint system if the top of the child’s head is less than 1 inch from the top of the headrest when it is in its highest position.

Product notes

Setup notes

  • Headrest/harness height: pull the head restraint adjuster tab and slide the head restraint up or down. Position it so the harness rests at the child’s shoulders or slightly below; the infant-insert fit criteria also require the bottom of the headrest to be positioned at or up to 1 inch above the shoulders.
  • Chest clip placement: position the chest clip at armpit level. UPPAbaby’s infant car seat fit guide says it should rest over the child’s collarbone and align with the snug harness.
  • Harness snugness: the harness should lie flat and pass the pinch test. If you can pinch webbing at the child’s shoulders, the harness is too loose and should be tightened.
  • Crotch buckle placement: the crotch belt and buckle have two use positions. Always position the buckle and crotch strap in the slot closest to the child. If the child is on top of the buckle in the inner position, move it to the outer position.
  • Crotch buckle fit: the crotch buckle should rest securely against the child with no gaps; the child must not sit on top of the buckle. UPPAbaby’s fit guide says it should sit flat against the child without gaps or slack and must not be under the child or too far forward.
