Transitions

Key transitions

Adjustments and changes as your baby grows, in the order they typically come up.

Choose starting size and shape

Informational

From birth; BIBS says all sizes can be introduced from birth, but most newborns prefer a smaller size and the common recommendation is Size 1 from 0+ months.

Start with an age-based size, usually Size 1, and try round, symmetrical, or anatomical shapes to find the best fit for your baby.

Replace pacifier regularly

Safety critical

Every 4-6 weeks of use, or sooner at the first sign of damage or weakness.

Discard the pacifier and replace it with a new one. Before each use, pull the nipple in all directions and inspect it carefully.

Replace worn latex nipple immediately

Safety critical

If a natural rubber latex nipple shows changes in the surface, size, or shape; rupture in the material; becomes brittle or sticky; or becomes enlarged.

Stop using that pacifier and replace it immediately.

Move to Size 2

Recommended

Around the 6-month mark, or as soon as your baby shows signs of teething or starts rejecting the smaller nipple size.

If your chosen BIBS pacifier design is available in Size 2 and your baby still uses a pacifier, transition from Size 1 to Size 2.

Increase inspection once teeth appear

Safety critical

When your child has teeth.

Be extra aware of signs of damage or weakness in the material. Pull the nipple in all directions before use and replace at the first sign of damage or weakness.

Begin reducing pacifier use

Recommended

From around 12 months of age.

Start reducing pacifier use and try limiting it to soothing before sleep at night.

Move to Size 3 if still using a pacifier

Recommended

At 18 months and older, if your toddler still benefits from pacifier use.

If your chosen BIBS pacifier design is available in Size 3, move to Size 3.

Stop pacifier use completely

Recommended

Between 2 and 3 years, depending on local guidelines.

Complete pacifier weaning and discontinue regular pacifier use.

Safety

Usage warnings

  • Inspect before each use by pulling the nipple in all directions; replace at the first sign of damage or weakness.
  • Replace pacifiers every 4-6 weeks for safety and hygiene.
  • Natural rubber latex pacifiers must be replaced if there are changes in the surface, size, or shape; rupture in the material; brittleness; stickiness; or an enlarged nipple.
  • If your child has teeth, be extra aware of signs of damage or weakness in the material.
  • BIBS says long-term pacifier use past age 4 can cause alignment issues with the permanent teeth.

Product notes

Compatibility

  • BIBS pacifiers are offered with three nipple shapes: round, symmetrical, and anatomical.
  • Round nipple: preferred by breastfed babies; designed to resemble the mother's soft nipple and promote a tongue placement and sucking technique similar to breastfeeding.
  • Symmetrical nipple: encourages natural tongue placement; BIBS says it reduces pressure on the jaws and teeth.
  • Anatomical nipple: supports the shape of the palate and jaw; BIBS says it demands minimal oral strength to stay put.
  • BIBS also states that no studies show one pacifier type is better than another regarding dental malocclusion; duration of use matters more than nipple shape.

Setup notes

  • BIBS says babies are different and recommends trying different shapes and sizes to find the best fit.
  • BIBS's size guide says all sizes can be introduced from birth, but most newborns prefer a smaller size.
  • As your baby grows, consider transitioning to larger sizes for comfort and safety.
  • Manufacturer weaning guidance found on official BIBS pages: start reducing pacifier use around 12 months and try limiting use to soothing before sleep at night.
  • AAP guidance found only via official BIBS pages summarizing AAP/AAPD: BIBS says AAP does not give a single official stop age but says pacifiers are best weaned between 2 and 4 years; BIBS also cites AAPD guidance to stop non-nutritive sucking by age 3.

Care instructions

  • Before first use, sterilize the pacifier by boiling it in plenty of water for 5 minutes.
  • For later cleaning, place the pacifiers in a clean bowl, pour them with plenty of boiling water, let them soak for about 5 minutes, then let them dry on a clean towel.
