Transitions

Key transitions

Adjustments and changes as your baby grows, in the order they typically come up.

Start Newborn Mode - Facing In

Safety critical

From birth, once baby meets the minimum size requirement of 7 lb / 3.2 kg and 20 in / 50.8 cm; use this mode for babies under 23 in / 58.4 cm.

Use Newborn Mode - Facing In. Fold the waistbelt inward twice to shorten the back panel and narrow the seat width for a newborn fit. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Maintain head and neck support

Safety critical

From 0-4 months or until baby has head/neck control / strong and consistent head and neck control.

When securing baby into the carrier, pull the padded head and neck support up to mid-ear level before securing straps; keep baby’s head supported by the head and neck support panel at mid-head / mid-ear level until head and neck control is established. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Switch to Baby Mode - Facing In

Safety critical

When baby is taller than 23 in / 58.4 cm; Ergobaby says this is typically around 2 months.

Stop folding the waistbelt. Secure it with the panel hanging down like an apron so baby has a longer back panel and wider supported seat. Babies shorter than 23 in / 58.4 cm should stay in Newborn Mode - Facing In. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Begin Baby Mode - Facing Out

Safety critical

Only when all of the following are true: baby is taller than 26 in / 66 cm, has strong head and neck control, chin is above / clears the carrier panel, and is showing interest in the world around them; Ergobaby says this is usually around 5-6 months.

Use Baby Mode - Facing Out / Front Carry Outward-Facing only after all readiness criteria are met. Keep baby’s face and chin clear of the panel, keep at least two fingers width clearance before baby’s chin, and do not spread the shoulder straps across your shoulder. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Transition out of the Embrace

Safety critical

When baby reaches 25 lb / 11.3 kg.

Stop using the Embrace once baby reaches the 25 lb / 11.3 kg maximum weight limit. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Safety

Usage warnings

  • Use the carrier only for babies between 7 lb (3.2 kg) and 25 lb (11.3 kg). ([ergobaby.com](https://www.ergobaby.com/cdn/shop/files/Instructions_Manual_-_Embrace.pdf?v=11765452333681230108))
  • Babies under 4 months can suffocate in this product if the face is pressed tight against your body; do not strap baby too tight, allow room for head movement, and keep baby’s face free from obstructions at all times. ([ergobaby.com](https://www.ergobaby.com/cdn/shop/files/Instructions_Manual_-_Embrace.pdf?v=11765452333681230108))
  • Baby must face toward you until he or she can hold the head upright. Only use the outward-facing carry position when baby has demonstrated strong and consistent head and neck control. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/media/asset/IM_Embrace_ROW_250305-V1.pdf))
  • Do not let baby sleep in the front outward-facing carry position. ([ergobaby.com](https://www.ergobaby.com/cdn/shop/files/Instructions_Manual_-_Embrace.pdf?v=11765452333681230108))
  • Constantly monitor your child and ensure the mouth and nose are unobstructed. Ensure your child’s chin is not resting on the chest. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/media/asset/IM_Embrace_ROW_250305-V1.pdf))
  • In facing-out mode, there should always be at least two fingers width clearance before baby’s chin. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/media/asset/IM_Embrace_ROW_250305-V1.pdf))
  • Check regularly that baby is properly seated, centered, with legs in a spread-squat position and head upright, not slumping downward or to the side. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/media/asset/IM_Embrace_ROW_250305-V1.pdf))
  • For smaller babies or adults with a long torso, wear the waistbelt higher so baby’s head is positioned close enough to kiss. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/media/asset/IM_Embrace_ROW_250305-V1.pdf))
  • Take baby out of the carrier before changing the carrier position. Never unbuckle the waistbelt while baby is in the carrier. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/media/asset/IM_Embrace_ROW_250305-V1.pdf))
  • Do not use facing out until baby is over 26 in / 66 cm, has good head and neck control, and the chin clears the back panel in good positioning. Baby’s face and chin must always clear the top of the panel. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))
  • Hip carry and back carry are not supported on this model; Ergobaby’s official sources list only Newborn Mode - Facing In, Baby Mode - Facing In, and Baby Mode - Facing Out / Front Carry Outward-Facing. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Product notes

Compatibility

  • No infant insert is required. Ergobaby says the Embrace is designed so you can carry a newborn who meets the minimum 7 lb / 3.2 kg and 20 in / 50.8 cm requirements without an infant insert. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Setup notes

  • Newborn Mode - Facing In: fold the waistbelt inward twice. Ergobaby says this shortens the back panel and narrows the seat width for a newborn. ([ergobaby.com](https://www.ergobaby.com/cdn/shop/files/Instructions_Manual_-_Embrace.pdf?v=11765452333681230108))
  • Baby Mode - Facing In: once baby is taller than 23 in / 58.4 cm, stop folding the waistbelt and secure it with the panel hanging down like an apron for a longer back panel and wider supported seat. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))
  • Head and neck support: the FAQ says to pull the padded head and neck support up to mid-ear level before securing straps and keep it there; the manual says baby’s head should be supported at mid-head level from 0-4 months or until baby has head/neck control. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))
  • After securing the shoulder straps, rotate baby’s hips so the bum sinks deep into the carrier, keep knees higher than bum for an M-position / spread-squat position, and make sure fabric supports thigh from knee to knee. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))
  • Shoulder straps: always cross the shoulder straps. In Newborn Mode - Facing In, spread the straps at the shoulders for additional head and neck support. In Baby Mode - Facing In, spreading at the shoulder is optional. In Baby Mode - Facing Out, do not spread the straps across your shoulder. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))

Care instructions

  • Fasten all buckles before washing. Ergobaby recommends placing the carrier in a pillowcase, using mild detergent free of bleach, perfumes, dyes, chlorine, or optical brighteners, machine washing cold (30°C), and air drying. ([ergobaby.com](https://ergobaby.com/faq/category/embrace))
