Transitions

Key transitions

Adjustments and changes as your baby grows, in the order they typically come up.

Begin front inward carry

Safety critical

When baby meets the minimum requirements: 7 lbs / 3.2 kg and 20 in / 50.8 cm.

Use Front Carry Inward Facing. No infant insert is needed. If baby is 20-24 in / 50.8-61 cm, set the seat using the red line indicators.

Set newborn head and neck support

Safety critical

For a newborn baby, 6 weeks and under (minimum 7 lbs / 3.2 kg).

Fold the head and neck support on the inside, and button it to the lower buttons on the front from the side using the tabs for a tighter support.

Move head and neck support to outside lower buttons

Safety critical

When baby starts to turn head from side to side and to hold head for a few moments. Ergobaby says this usually happens around 7 weeks.

Fold the neck and head support on the outside and button it to the lower buttons.

Use extra head and neck support for sleep if needed

Informational

For older babies, when extra support is needed, such as when baby is sleeping.

Button up the head and neck support for extra support when needed.

Move seat to yellow lines

Safety critical

When baby is 24-28 in / 61-71 cm (~3-9 months).

Adjust the seat using the velcro tabs on the waistbelt to the yellow line setting.

Start front outward-facing carry

Safety critical

When baby demonstrates strong head and neck control, starts showing interest in the world around them, is taller than 25 in / 63.5 cm, baby’s chin is above the carrier panel / clears the top of the panel, and baby weighs at least 14 lbs / 6.4 kg. Ergobaby says this is usually around 5-6 months.

Use Front Carry Outward Facing. Widen the seat to the widest setting (Blue Velcro setting), move the sliders to the inner setting, keep baby’s arms out the sides above the shoulder strap attachment point, and make sure the head and neck support is folded down on the outside and buttoned to the lower buttons. If baby gets sleepy or overstimulated, turn baby to face you; use this position for shorter durations only, around 20 minutes, and remove baby completely from the carrier for repositioning.

Start hip carry

Safety critical

When baby demonstrates strong head and neck control, can sit unassisted, and weighs 17.2 lbs minimum / 7.8 kg. Ergobaby says this is usually around 5-6 months; product page labels Hip Carry as ~6+ months.

You can start using Hip Carry. Set the sliders to the outward setting.

Start back carry

Safety critical

When baby demonstrates strong head and neck control, can sit unassisted, and weighs 17.2 lbs minimum / 7.8 kg. Ergobaby says this is usually around 5-6 months; product page labels Back Carry as ~6+ months.

You can start using Back Carry. Set the sliders to the outward setting.

Move seat to blue lines for larger baby

Safety critical

When baby is over 28 in / 71 cm (~9 months+).

Adjust the seat using the velcro tabs on the waistbelt to the blue line setting for size-based seat adjustment.

Safety

Usage warnings

  • Front outward-facing is prohibited until baby displays good head and neck control and baby’s chin clears the carrier panel when in good positioning.
  • Front outward-facing requires baby to have strong head and neck control, be taller than 25 in / 63.5 cm, and baby’s chin must always clear the top of the panel.
  • In outward-facing position, baby’s arms should always come out the sides of the carrier above the shoulder strap attachment point; NEVER out of the top edge of the carrier above the neck support.
  • If baby gets sleepy or shows signs of overstimulation while outward facing, turn baby around to face you. Ergobaby recommends the outward-facing position for shorter durations only, around 20 minutes, and baby should be removed completely from the carrier for repositioning.
  • Hip Carry and Back Carry should not be used until baby demonstrates strong head and neck control, can sit unassisted, and weighs at least 17.2 lbs / 7.8 kg.
  • Until baby has demonstrated strong and consistent head and neck support, the top edge of the carrier should be at baby’s mid-ear level for proper support.
  • With a newborn baby, wear the waistbelt high and tight on your waist so baby is close enough to kiss.
  • After breastfeeding in the carrier, reposition so baby’s face is not pressed against your body; move baby to the recommended carrying position immediately after breastfeeding, remove slack from straps, and adjust.
  • After securing shoulder straps, make sure baby’s bum is evenly centered in the carrier, baby is in a deep seated position, knees are higher than bum, and the padded thigh area reaches from knee to knee.
